Luke Harrop Bursary

Luke Harrop was one of Australia’s brightest up and coming triathletes when he was tragically struck by a car whilst out on a training ride.  In memory of Luke, his family have established a Bursary to assist paratriathletes and athletes with a disability across Australia.

In its inaugural year in 2019, the Bursary was awarded to Isabelle Derriman and Sara Tait.  We are now calling for applications for the 2020 Bursary.

Applications close Sunday March 15, 2020.

The Luke Harrop Bursary has been developed to assist paratriathletes and athletes with a disability to enter or improve their access to the sport of triathlon.

The Bursary is designed to assist athletes in at least one of the following categories:

  1. To assist in using sport as a means of recovery from an illness/accident/injury for new or existing triathletes. This includes medical and allied health costs not otherwise covered.
  2. To contribute to training costs.
  3. To contribute to travelling costs.
  4. To contribute to special clothing costs.
  5. To contribute to equipment costs.
  6. To contribute to mentoring costs.

The Committee may add to or amend these objectives from year to year.

Outside of the Bursary, the committee aims to improve the awareness of paratriathletes and athletes with a disability within the broader athlete community and the media.

The funds raised each year are available for dispersal the following year.  The Committee shall disperse up to the amount raised in the previous year. Any funds not dispersed will be rolled into the following year.

The Committee will be chaired by a member of the Harrop family and include a current or retired paratriathlete/athlete with a disability, and a member from the local triathlon community.  The Committee will be appointed and administered by the Harrop family.

The Committee will assess applications, taking into account the support structures already in place for the athlete.

A call for applications will be made for the 2020 Luke Harrop Bursary in February 2020.  Applications will be submitted online.

Applications must meet at least one of the six listed objectives.  In 2020 the Bursary will have a combined totally value of $5000 and will be available for up to four individuals.  This amount may be split in any way the Committee sees fit and does not need to be awarded in equal amounts.  The Committee is under no obligation to award the whole amount available and may reduce the number of applicants depending on the applications received.

The Application Process

To apply for the grant, the application form must be filled out and submitted before 11.59pm AEST March 10, 2020.  Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.  Once you have submitted the application, you will be emailed a copy of your submission.  You can only submit one application per person.  You will be asked to link your application to your email address so that you can edit after you have submitted it, should you need to.

Successful applicants will be paid by bank transfer into their own account.  For 2020, successful applicants do not need to submit an acquittal or receipts on how the money was spent.

Individuals who are Australian residents are eligible to apply.  Groups are not eligible.  Those living outside Australia are not eligible.  Athletes who have previously received the Bursary are eligible to reapply.

What can be funded

The Luke Harrop Foundation will fund physical items or costs associated with medical, training, equipment, clothing, travel and/or mentoring costs to assist the applicant to compete in triathlon.  The application must specify what the funds will be used for, and if there are multiple items that funding is requested for, then these must be itemised.  The Bursary can not fund items you have already received, items you receive for free or sponsored, items/services covered by another funding organisation (however gap payments may be covered).

Your application might be for the full amount of an item/service you need, or multiple smaller items/services.  If you are applying for funds towards a larger project, please let us know how the remainder will be funded.  The Committee may award part of the total sum you have applied for.

How much money is available?

The total amount available for dispersal in 2020 is $5000.  It is anticipated that the Bursary will be awarded to 4 individuals.  However, there may be circumstances where the total amount is not disbursed this year, or the anticipated number of recipients is increased or decreased.  This is entirely at the discretion of the Committee.  The decision of the Committee is final and can not be appealed.

Do I need to be racing at the Gold Coast Triathlon: Luke Harrop Memorial to be eligible to receive the Bursary?

No, applicants will be assessed equally regardless if you are racing or not.
